Oleksander was as good as his word both in that he completely wore me out in my twin bed and that it was possible to look for apartments to rent on a two-hour notice.

“David, you’re killing me, brother. What is this?” Oleksander stood on the sidewalk, his hands on his hips, looking around. “There is no way. I’m not even going inside this apartment.”

“Just give it a chance,” I said, exhausted from the hunt. There was nothing wrong with the area, that I could tell, other than it skewed a little young. We’d looked at three apartments in various parts of Brooklyn already and Olek had found a major flaw with every single one, where as far as I was concerned, there had been none.

“No way. This neighborhood is fine if I want to skateboard and smoke weed, but not to raise a baby.”

I blinked and looked at David, the cheerful real estate agent. “Is he serious?” He sounded like an old man.

“He sounds serious. Train, are you serious?”

“Dead-ass serious. Next place.”

“I think we should try a more traditional neighborhood,” David said. “The Upper West Side?”

Now I was the one who protested. “That’s very traditional. I don’t see myself there.” I was wearing overalls and didn’t own one designer anything. Honestly, I didn’t see myself anywhere other than Washington Heights because I’d never thought about it. I hadn’t planned to move anytime soon. “David, can you give us a minute?”

“Sure.” The agent nodded and discreetly moved down the sidewalk, pulling his phone out.

“What’s the matter?” Olek asked. “Did you want to go inside?”

I shook my head. “No, it’s fine. I just think maybe we shouldn’t try to force this. If I’m coming down to New Orleans in August, why do I need a new apartment here now? It’s only a few months. Then it will be sitting empty for six months. That’s a lot of rent for an empty apartment.”

“What are we supposed to do when I am in town? Stay in a hotel?”

“Sure, why not? You’re only here once a month for a day or two.” Everything about this process was stressing me out. I didn’t want to impulsively pick an apartment and some of the price tags were giving me major anxiety. I knew Olek could afford them but it made me uncomfortable. “Shouldn’t we take our time?”

We hadn’t even discussed our relationship and he was ready to pull the trigger on real estate like it was buying a sweater at Saks. Which I would hem and haw about for days. I’ve put more items in online shopping carts and never purchased them than I’d like to admit. It might actually be considered a hobby of mine.

He didn’t say anything. That meant he didn’t agree with me. I didn’t always understand Olek’s emotions or know what he was thinking, but his behaviors were very consistent in giving me clues. He wasn’t the guy to communicate fully when he was angry or upset. He held back.
